Parker inverters help fuel energy storage
1st Quarter 2017, Electrical switching & drive systems & components

A major project to create a modular energy storage system for electric vehicle rapid chargers is making use of inverter technology supplied by motion and control specialist, Parker. The project is spearheaded by Future Transport Systems and its subsidiary Connected Energy, and along with Parker also involves automotive OEM giant, Renault.

Rapid charging is one of the main factors affecting the increased uptake of electric vehicles. However, as recharging rates increase and systems are installed to meet growing demand, the development constraint is fast becoming the local electricity supply network. As a result, Connected Energy and its partners, including Parker, set about creating the E-STOR range of energy storage systems.

These modular, self-contained, expandable and portable devices address the issues associated with upgrading site electricity networks when installing plug-in vehicle rapid charging infrastructure. The remotely managed solution offers a potentially faster, cheaper and more flexible alternative to network infrastructure upgrades.

Utilising proven Li-ion, second life automotive battery technology, high efficiency power conversion and state-of-the-art monitoring systems, E-STOR is supplied typically as a 50 kW/50 kWh nominal rated module. The integral management system optimises energy storage in real time in relation to complementary assets and parameters. Furthermore, the system provides detailed technical and operational reporting, along with remote site management, monitoring and control.

The system comprises modular batteries and integral battery management systems, bi-directional battery charger, isolation transformer, power control module, AC/DC protection, HMI, router and communication interface. It is delivered pre-assembled and requires a minimum of preparation.
