A quality sealing solution

4th Quarter 2010 News & events

SKF recently unveiled the Economos Seal Jet machine at its Solutions Factory in Jet Park, Gauteng.

The company now has the ability to manufacture custom-made machined seals on-site in addition to its existing standard range. A major advantage of the machine is its ability to deliver machined seals for prototyping projects. Hence only one seal needs to be presented for approval before embarking on costly mould changes.

The Seal Jet offers quality sealing and engineering plastics solutions. Seals can be tailor-made, lead times are reduced and no stock keeping is necessary for the client. Costs are kept down as no tooling is required during the process. There are also unlimited profile designs. The machine can be used with an extensive range of materials complying with FDA, NSF, USP, 3A Sanitary and KTW regulations.

The machining system is equipped with its own software and tools which are specifically designed for use on high performance polymer materials.

The standard seal size ranges from 2 mm up to 600 mm OD. Seals above 600 mm can be produced on request. Large diameter seals above 8000 mm, used in turbines or presses, can be manufactured by utilising a specially developed welding technique that allows on-site fitting by an experienced international team.

The Seal Jet machine is an initiative of SKF’s Solutions Factory Africa. Launched in July 2009, this is a vehicle for value-added seal services to reduce the total cost of ownership and enhance efficiency by improving customers’ machines and equipment. “We partner with our customers. Our comprehensive package, which includes root cause analyses and design of core seal technologies, enables us to devise integrated solutions for improved equipment performance and prolonged equipment life. In so doing we assist customers to achieve optimum plant production by reducing the risk of equipment failure and expensive downtime,” says Andre Weyers, manager – Seals Development.

This was a massive achievement.
