Ball screw actuators

1st Quarter 2011 News & events

Duff-Norton ball screw actuators provide high efficiency and speed in one linear positioning package. They can handle full load in tension or compression. The positive action of the low friction ball screw and nut design increases the life at load and reduces the power needed to achieve a specified thrust. They come in many standard models or can be custom-designed for any application from half a ton up to 50 tons. They can be used individually, in tandem or as part of a larger mechanical system. With lifts up to 7 m, the actuators offer a solution to many linear positioning applications.

Adjustable to take end play out of bearings, the shell cap is locked into place by set screws. The ball nut is equipped with return tubes for continuous recirculation of the steel balls. It is threaded and secured to the worm gear which is constructed of wear resistant bronze and is accurately hobbed for greater gear contact.

Load bearings at the top and bottom take loads in either direction. The worm is available with double or single shaft extension. Clockwise rotation of this end raises load on all actuator models except the 50 ton ball screw actuator units. Thrust bearing and grease seals are situated at each end of the worm. The half- and 1-ton models have aluminium housings, the 2 to 10-ton models have ductile iron cast steel housings and the 20-ton to 50-ton models are housed in cast steel.

Duff-Norton is represented locally by Yale Engineering.

Execution of the massive Azmet Reactor project DRC
Editor's Choice News & events
The Azmet Reactor project, a collaborative effort led by Viva Engineering, involved fabricating six massive reactors that were over three stories high in Gauteng, and then transporting these more than 2500 kilometres to a mine in the DRC - where all 3265 parts fitted perfectly, with not even one of the 26 900 bolts out of place. This was a massive achievement.
