Training in fluid transfer

4th Quarter 2014 News & events

Throughout the mining industry, the lack of formal training in hose assembly for high pressure fluid transfer has led to skilled workers being unable to gain recognition for this specialised skill. The absence of accredited and structured training has resulted in an increase in potentially dangerous working conditions, where partially skilled workers are required to perform tasks that require intensive training.

The new MERSETA accredited qualification launched by Sparrow FET College in conjunction with fluid specialist, Pirtek, is aimed at the transfer of skills in the make-up of hydraulic pipe assemblies and the use of proper connectors, while ensuring safety remains a primary consideration in the assembly process. The fulltime skills programme is designed to deliver short, high-impact training in the assembly of high pressure hoses. It includes an extensive theoretical component followed by time spent in the workplace where the student is tested on the application of the skill in a realistic setting.

The programme has two phases. Phase 1 at NQF level 1 covers intensive training on the theoretical underpinnings of hose assembly for high pressure hose assembly. Students are also exposed to practical simulations to prepare them for application of the skill. Phase 2 at NQF level 3 focuses on skills in making up, installing, maintaining and commissioning fluid power hose assembly systems. The students also spend an extended period of time in a real work environment where the application of their skills is tested and developed in line with safety regulations and requirements.

Execution of the massive Azmet Reactor project DRC
Editor's Choice News & events
The Azmet Reactor project, a collaborative effort led by Viva Engineering, involved fabricating six massive reactors that were over three stories high in Gauteng, and then transporting these more than 2500 kilometres to a mine in the DRC - where all 3265 parts fitted perfectly, with not even one of the 26 900 bolts out of place. This was a massive achievement.
