Engine test bench

4th Quarter 2016 Pneumatic systems & components

Hyflo Cape Town was approached to design and build a system to supply diesel and oil to a V20 3300 kW diesel engine test bench. The project has been undertaken by China North Rail as part of Transnet’s Freight Rail expansion plan. The final assembly, painting and testing of just over two hundred engines will take place in Cape Town.

The project comprises two scopes, namely the oil and the diesel systems, which were manufactured in four modular skids. The oil system is designed to fill and empty the engine’s sump, as well as circulate the oil prior to engine startup. In the unlikely case of an engine failure, the oil must be discarded to a waste tank.

The diesel system is required to supply the diesel engine with 21 l/min and regulate the temperature of the diesel to 2°C. The temperature control is achieved using Alfa Laval heat exchangers in combination with a Daikin chiller unit. The oil and fuel are both transferred using gear pumps.

The system uses Festo pneumatic process control valves to direct the flow of the fuel and oil. The process valves are actuated using a 16 station Festo CPX ProfiNet valve terminal. The complete system was modelled in 3D to ensure the manufacturing process was fast while utilising the optimal quantity and size of the components.
