Corrosion solution for engine hot testing

Third Quarter 2026 Other technologies

Cortec VpCI-649 BD is a corrosion solution for hot engine testing at multiple global diesel engine manufacturers. As more facilities across North and South America, Europe and Asia realise the advantages of VpCI-649 BD for engine hot testing and outdoor storage, Cortec stands ready to extend the same technology and technical support that has made life easier for engine makers around the globe.

Why protect engines during hot testing and cold storage?

Engine internals are at risk for corrosion from water used during hot engine testing and fill and flush activities. Corrosion affects the engine’s like-new appearance and threatens its integrity. The addition of VpCI-649 BD makes a significant difference by leaving behind a protective film of Vapour-phase Corrosion Inhibitors that diffuse throughout the surrounding compartment and inhibit corrosion, even in the presence of residual water, months into storage.

In May 2023, a major manufacturer of off-road engines started full-scale testing of VpCI-649 BD to address corrosion concerns. They now add a 3% solution of VpCI-649 BD to the cooling system for an hour of hot testing, and a 5% solution of VpCI-649 BD combined with glycol, for engines that are later stored in cold climates. Eight months into the trial, the engine maker pronounced their corrosion problem cured and began to spread the word to global counterparts who started adopting the same solution. While VpCI-649 BD was initially used to protect the cast iron of very large engine blocks, it is now being considered for smaller engines with aluminium components like those in the automotive industry.
