Energy efficient baling press

3rd Quarter 2012 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

HSM GmbH, a German manufacturer of baling presses, cutting machines and PET solutions, developed a fully automatic channel baling press to enhance its environmental engineering product range. With an extremely high pressing force of 1100 kN and a large filling hatch of about 1000 x 1800 mm, this press can handle a wide variety of materials. Bales can weigh up to 700 kg at 1200 mm length and reach dimensions of 1100 x 750 x 1200 mm.

Bonfiglioli solution

HSM puts considerable effort into the reduction of energy consumption in its machines, which are designed to operate 24 hours round the clock. The cyclic process of shearing, compression and withdrawal only takes about 20 seconds. Estimated energy consumption of one machine is up to 500 MWh per year, equivalent to about €50 000.

Bonfiglioli was able to assist. A testing machine was equipped with two 75 kW motors which drove two hydraulic pumps. For testing purposes, full load was simulated by a 150 kW counterpress. Bonfiglioli’s Series ACU inverters utilise field oriented algorithms which are very efficient and react fast to changing load conditions. With these inverters the part load efficiency of the system is close to the nominal efficiency. This was proven by very extensive measurements of current, torque, power, flow and pressure.

The overall reduction in energy consumption exceeded all expectations – 40% under full load. This translates to savings of up to €20 000 a year. Additional benefits are noise reduction under partload conditions and fewer cooling units for the hydraulic fluid. Amortisation is possible within one year.
