Festo has introduced its new patented PPS technology to South Africa. This innovative technology decreases installation and commissioning time of pneumatic cylinders by automatically setting the cushioning on the cylinder.
Before PPS, technicians had to manually adjust the pneumatic end position cushioning of the cylinder. Manual adjustment can be a time-consuming exercise, particularly when there are a large number of units to install and calibrate. Additionally, there are often inconsistencies in the cushioning adjustments, causing unnecessary strain on the machine from end position knocking. Depending on where the cylinder is placed, it can also be extremely difficult to reach and make adjustments.
“Longitudinal slots on the cushioning sleeve ensure the controlled discharge of air, eliminating the need for manual calibration,” says Festo product marketing manager: pneumatic, Brian Abbott. “PPS ensures optimum cushioning performance at all times. Once installed, the self-adjusting cushioning automatically adjusts for changes in parameters such as friction, velocity, pressure and load.”
The technology eliminates downstream problems resulting from cylinders being incorrectly adjusted or not adjusted at all, such as reduced life span of machine parts caused by excess vibration and noise. It is available as an option on the Festo clean design DSBF cylinder and the stainless steel CRDSNU round cylinder, as well as the ADN and DSBx ranges of standard cylinders.
The PPS technology is not compatible with all cylinders or applications and to solve this Festo has created a PPS-Check app that is supported by most smartphone web browsers. Users can enter the parameters of the cylinder to check if PPS technology is recommended for the specific application. To download the app visit m.festo.com/pps
