Water operated couplings

3rd Quarter 2013 Shaft power components

Voith’s water operated TW coupling combines customer requirements with Voith’s expertise and specialist ability to develop, design and manufacture a genuine soft-start device. It provides overload protection for both motor and machine.

The advantage of pure water as operating medium of a fluid coupling lies in its environmental friendliness. Constant-fill fluid couplings from Voith are used with electric motors in a wide range of applications, especially when highest powers, economy and reliability are required. The range of constant-fill couplings is perfectly engineered to meet demanding conveyor drive applications with high capacities and lengths in bulk materials handling and processing industries.

They contain a constant quantity of operating fluid, usually mineral oil but water or fire-retardant fluids are also used. The torque transmitted by the drive motor is converted into kinetic energy of the operating fluid in the pump wheel to which the motor is connected. In the turbine wheel, this kinetic energy is converted back into mechanical energy.

Fluid couplings contribute to a start–up component that is smooth and reliable. Perfectly engineered for demanding drives in materials handling and processing industries, they perform efficiently under the most stringent operating conditions.

The couplings incorporate a number of outstanding characteristics to ensure efficient, safe and economical operation. They limit the introduced torque during start-up and accelerate the working machine smoothly, providing a nearly load-free start-up and run-up of the motor. They are suitable for economically priced squirrel cage motors and no motor modification is required. During operation the couplings absorb shocks and vibrations. Compensation and step starting for multi-motor drives and higher thermal capacity and heat dissipation offer the highest possible operating safety.
