Big order for rail safety device

3rd Quarter 2013 Other technologies

Specialist engineering group, Horne, has secured a R25 million order for 200 Technopost underground rail safety devices. The customer, a platinum mining company, will install the Technoposts in all shaft stations across all mines, preventing the accidental passage of locomotives, ore hoppers and other underground rolling stock into danger areas immediately around the shafts.

Technopost is a South African product designed as an emergency stopping device for underground track-bound equipment. It comprises a strain energy absorption grid made up of multi-bar units connected in a staggered pattern. On impact, the grid bars yield and deform under double curvature bending, undergoing strain hardening that absorbs the impact energy.

The system is mounted within the track itself, flush between the rails, with one end anchored to the footwall and the other attached to a vertical impact post. Grids can be combined in series or parallel to suit energy absorption requirements and the space constraints of the installation site.

A company spokesman claimed Technopost to be superior to other underground emergency rail devices on the market because of its characteristic of absorbing energy rather than acting as a rigid barrier.

“A reasonable analogy would be to compare a rubber buffer with a brick wall,” the spokesman commented. “Minimal damage, if any, is caused to the runaway rolling stock when Technopost is activated,” he said.
