The recent discovery of additional deposits of copper, magnetite and phosphorous in the vicinity of the mining town of Phalaborwa has extended the life-of-mine of two large mines in the area and breathed new life into the 60-year-old town. This presented Hydroscand South Africa with an opportunity to open a new branch and become the first OEM to have an hydraulic company in Phalaborwa, an area where open-cast and underground mining and related activities are of great importance.
As a reflection of the Hydroscand board’s confidence in South Africa, the branch is also the first of its kind for Hydroscand in SA in that it not only supplies hoses and fittings like the rest of the business in SA, but also supplies services and repairs the other four major hydraulic components, these being cylinders, motors, pumps and valves – the hydraulic Big Five.

It would not be possible to open a branch like this without the right people. Overseeing the establishment and opening of the branch was branch manager, Hein Meyer, who brought on board four highly accomplished and experienced hydraulic specialists: David Green, Etienne Quin, Jannie Lingenfelder and Rennete Malatji. All are born and bred Phalaborwa locals with many years of experience in hydraulics. The official opening of the branch took place at an open day on the 8th of May with many local customers and buyers in attendance, and celebrations went on until late in the night.
