Safety passports for the fluid power industry

3rd Quarter 2015 News & events

At the most recent SAFPA technical meeting, Jamie Cliffe, global director of Safety Management Training Services group and Gavin Wilson, MD and licence holder for the South African Safety Passport Alliance (SA SPA) gave an introduction to the concept of standardising safety training across industries and the potential this has for the fluid power industry.

The fast growing Safe Pass Alliance and Safety Passports offer a solution to standardising health and safety training and awareness across industries. They have been widely adopted in the petroleum industry and are becoming an increasingly common standard in construction and other industries.

Cliffe says that the introduction of safety passports to the fluid power industry in South Africa is likely to impact the industry across sub-Saharan Africa and may well influence standards in Europe as well as in the British Fluid Power Association, with which SAFPA is currently attempting to align. The petroleum and construction industry sectors where the SA SPA has been introduced have praised the scheme due to noticeable and substantial reductions in HS&E incidents among contractors, maintenance staff and supply chain personnel, who are required to have this standard as part of approval/accreditation schemes for the supply chain.
