Flexible drive inverter family

Fourth Quarter 2004 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Size 0 - (0,55 kW to 1,5 kW) units of the Movidrive family were introduced by SEW-Eurodrive at the PLC/IPC/DRIVES Trade Fair in 2002. The units enhanced the comprehensive series and offered extended functions, such as integrated safety functions compliant with EN951.1, additional I/O installed in the basic unit, or a new keypad with nine selectable languages. This innovation together with the Movidrive units that were already successful in many industry sectors, created a series with a power range from 0,55 kW to 160 kW with consistent functionality.

Those responsible for the planning, standardisation, start up, servicing or spare part storage for drive engineering, will be aware of the problem of reconciling the different functional requirements while keeping within the budget for project planning, training and storage.

Modern conveyor systems, handling systems, packaging plants or production plants often require dynamic servo drives, as well as affordable variable speed asynchronous drives. These drives often need to be connected to master supervisory computers or central controllers. Movidrive is an application inverter that offers a solution for asynchronous and synchronous motors from simple motors to dynamic servomotors (small power ranges included).

The demands on application inverters differ depending on the application and can require a high level of functionality. In order to match the costs for application-specific frequency inverters to the system, it makes sense to supply the basic units equipped to carry out standard tasks. They can then be extended to perform any additional tasks required. SEW-Eurodrive has been successfully doing just this for years, with its Movidrive application-specific frequency inverter. Now, the new small size 0 unit, from 0,55 kW to 1,5 kW, not only extends the power range, but also greatly improves the performance of the series.

Movidrive size 0 is the first unit from the revised Movidrive series, which keeps the following features:

* Basic unit equipped for standard applications.

* Torque, speed and positioning control.

* Flux vector control for motors with and without brake.

* Options for bus connection, additional I/O, technology functions.

* Connection of either asynchronous or synchronous motors.

* Integrated IPOSplus positioning and sequence control system.

* 125% continuous overload capacity for pumps and fans.

* Software modules for positioning, winding, synchronous operation, etc.

* Connection of resolver, TTL, sin/cos, or Hiperface encoders.

And also features:

* Integrated 'safe stop' safety function according to EN954-1, category 3.

* 200% short-term overload capacity for dynamic applications.

* Integrated memory card for replacing units quickly during servicing.

* Clear improvement in the performance of the IPOSplus positioning and sequence control system.

* New keypad with full matrix display and nine selectable languages.

Small and efficient

The dimensions of the new size 0 unit continue the trend of installing ever-smaller cabinets. With connected plugs for bus systems, or motor encoders, the maximum installation height required is only 260 mm. This means that the unit can be installed in standard 300 mm cabinets. As the unit is only 45 mm wide, it does not require much lateral space either. The unit is designed so that optional components can be installed on the right-hand side. In this way, the user only has to create space in the cabinet for options if they are needed.

Simple to use

End users no longer have to be specialists in drive engineering. All settings for the drive, including the program and variables are provided on a pluggable memory card. Like the GSM card in a mobile telephone, each Movidrive unit has a memory card. This means that users no longer require a specialist to carry out servicing. Replacing the unit quite easy. Users can use an adapter to download an altered unit setting from the PC onto the memory card directly in the office. An on-site electrician only needs to install the electrical connections and insert the card into the unit.

Options

The basic unit has eight digital inputs, four digital outputs, one analog input, two RS485 interfaces and an interface that can be switched from CAN to CANopen to connect several units via a system bus connection. The inputs and outputs are compliant with EN954-1 for the integrated safety function. Whoever needs more, can choose from a wide range of options. Bus interfaces, an I/O extension and encoder inputs are available as option cards:

* Profibus DPV1.

* Interbus with fibre-optic cable.

* Interbus with copper cable.

* DeviceNet.

* CAN.

* CANopen.

* I/O extension with 16 digital I/O and 3 analog I/O.

* Encoder connection for resolver or Hiperface.

The options are fitted to the side of the unit and ensure the basic unit maintains its slim fit. A brake resistor can be installed directly on the unit.

Integrated safety functions according to EN954

The size 0 Movidrive units include the required construction measures from the basic unit to fulfil the standard requirements of EN954-1, category 3 as a safety-related component. In future, it will be easy to stop movement safely without having to activate contactors, which are subject to wear. The unit comes equipped with the required connections.

Global operation

All the necessary certifications, such as CE, UL, CSA or C-Tick have been approved. The pluggable keypad already has the nine most-important languages installed as pure text. This means that users no longer have to spend time searching through the documentation to find out the meanings of the various parameter numbers. At the same time, the inverter is still user-friendly and intuitive, thanks to the simple programming of the buttons.

Expansion of functions with 100% compatibility

With 100% functional compatibility, identical mounting dimensions and identical terminal assignment, the extended Movidrive units guarantee improved performance for the integrated IPOSplus positioning and control sequence system. This means the possibilities for even the most ambitious programming are practically unlimited.
