Second Quarter 2007 News & events

Technews CEO Vivienne Dorrington and her team, will roll out the red carpet to some of South Africa’s finest business players in the most prestigious golf tournament of its kind, the Technews Technology Challenge.

On 2 August 2007, Technews will launch what will become the annual Technews Golf Challenge. The Technews Golf Challenge is an inter-sector competition, for business professionals in the technology sectors of ICT, manufacturing, engineering, security and the media serving them. To be played at the prestigious Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club – East, this high-profile tournament aims to be the most prestigious golf challenge of its kind.

Competition Format

The competition is a 2-ball, Betterball Stableford competition played between these four primary sectors served by Technews. The following sectors have been invited to take part:

* Security.

* ICT.

* Process control, automation, instrumentation.

* Electronic and electrical engineering.

* Media and related services.

Says Dorrington, “Each of these industry sectors will compete amongst themselves to be crowned the sector’s champion team, and in addition the overall winning team will receive the Technews Golf Challenge floating trophy. And of course serious bragging rights for the rest of the year.”

The Ray Beaumont Trust

Profits from the event will go to the Ray Beaumont Trust which will be used to further technical and engineering skills, in an effort to reduce the acute skills crisis prevalent in South Africa.

Adds Dorrington, “In creating The Ray Beaumont Trust, we have a vision, which is to assist aspirant young South African engineers and technicians to reach their full potential in our country’s dynamic economy. We have all heard the stories, in one form or another, about the skills crisis that South Africa faces.”

To realise its vision, the Ray Beaumont Trust has given itself a mission:  to make it easier for South African youngsters to get the qualifications they need in order to secure their professional futures.

“More specifically,” says Dorrington, “the purpose of the Ray Beaumont Trust is the creation of an effective scholarship and bursary program to assist these aspirant young South African engineers and technicians. This event, and the Ray Beaumont Trust that it supports epitomise our belief in the future of this country.”

“The Technews Golf Challenge will be a place where business and competition can meet in the spirit of gentle rivalry. In that same spirit The Ray Beaumont Trust will seek to contribute to the continued support and quality of South African engineering and technical talent.”
