Electra Mining Africa 2010

September 2010 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Electra Mining Africa 2010 is ranked as the second largest mining show in the world and offers both exhibitors and visitors the opportunity to make valuable business connections. It also provides a forum for discussing the latest developments, technologies, trends, products and services in the mining, construction, industrial and power generation industries. Many companies are aiming to leverage the opportunities provided by Electra Mining Africa to launch new products onto the market.

SKF

SKF will give visitors the opportunity to view and discuss the company’s pre-lubricated, sealed spherical roller bearings. They are protected against both particle and moisture contamination and perform consistently in demanding conditions.

SKF’s Economos Seal Jet machine will also be on display. This supplies standard and custom-made machined seals which are suitable for prototyping projects. This means that only one seal needs to be presented for approval before developers embark on costly mould changes.

Another exhibit will be SKF’s range of modular linear profile rail guides, LLT, which are designed to combine high operating speeds with heavy load capacities. They offer excellent rigidity, repeatability and accuracy in a system that can easily be configured to meet the requirements of both OEMs and end users.

The SKF Electrical Barrel Pumping Unit will also be on show. This was designed to fill the gap between the compact Multilube pumping unit and the plant-wide Maxilube pneumatic pumping station. Equipped with an internal pressure relief valve and pressure control, the pump can create up to 250 bar pressure and 80 g/min lubricant output. It offers mining and other heavy industries a solution for applications where larger pumping capacity is demanded but where compressed air is not always available, for example in remote areas.

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency will once again be a major theme, with many companies trying to decrease energy consumption and cut costs. “Energy efficiency is a non-negotiable in business today” comments Ute Bormann, SEW Eurodrive general manager for Sales and Marketing.

SEW Eurodrive

SEW Eurodrive is also planning to go all out at Electra Mining. The company will be exhibiting the new DR series range of motors, launched earlier this year. The range is extremely energy efficient. It also allows the drive technology to be matched to a specific application. This results in significant economic benefits.

SEW will also use Electra Mining 2010 as the official launch platform for its new range of planetary industrial gears, the P-Series. These are suitable for the mining industry as well as any other application which requires low output speed and high torque.

The X-Series range of industrial gears which was launched at Electra Mining 2008 will also be on show. These units have done particularly well in the marketplace and have been installed in a number of mines on the African continent.

Another energy saving solution developed by SEW Eurodrive is the mechatronic drive system, the Movigear, which won the 2007 Frost and Sullivan Award for product innovation. The Movigear was developed to meet the complex requirements of horizontal technology in a wide range of industries.

Yet another new product from SEW is the Electric Cylinder which offers position accuracy that is of special interest to the food, beverage and consumer industries.

The winning display from the PneuDrive Challenge 2010 – the student mechatronic design competition sponsored by SEW Eurodrive and Festo – will be on show at the stand as well.

BMG

Visitors to BMG’s stand will be able to interact with a touch screen facility which profiles BMG’s extensive product range.

One highlight will be the company’s new 'world class production efficiency' initiative. This offers simple cost control solutions which can help local industry deal with the danger of being uncompetitive. The company’s energy efficiency campaign – which strives for plant capacity maximisation – emphasises the importance of energy efficient products, correct product selection and sizing, operational cost reduction and condition-based monitoring.

The range of energy efficient power transmission components is designed to significantly reduce electricity consumption in diverse industries. These energy efficient products include Eskom endorsed quality branded electric motors; self adjusting motor bases; frequency inverters; fluid couplings; and synthetic oils. They ensure optimum efficiency, reduced power consumption, low maintenance and extended service life.

New to BMG’s portfolio since the last Electra Mining exhibition are products from BMG Hydraulics. These include variable and fixed displacement pumps, industrial and mobile valves, accumulators, low and high speed motors, as well as cylinders. This division also offers a complete turnkey project capability on hydraulic systems.

BMG Filtration, which provides filtration, separation and purification products and technologies, will showcase its new filtration products that utilise rare earth magnetic ferrous contamination control technology.

Safety

Another key theme related to the mining industry is safety. Companies will be exhibiting products focused on the mining and construction industries’ need for a safer and more productive working environment.

Becker Group

Becker Group’s product portfolio includes communication and collision avoidance systems, electrical and electronics equipment, transport systems, pumps, shaft safety components, underground and tunnel supports, as well as lifting and maintenance equipment.

A recently launched product which will be showcased is the new intrinsically safe Becker WRAP Wireless Router Access Point (WRAP) Wi-Fi system, which ensures reliable, safe and efficient communication underground. This system does not limit usage to a single technology, but encompasses migration and integration of many technologies.

Becker’s latest patented tri-technology collision avoidance system (CAS) has been developed to overcome the limitations of existing systems in the industry. This new system provides levels of audible and visual warning proportional to the position of the threat and also has the ability to 'stop' a vehicle, should this be necessary.

Becker Engineering will show the newly launched Kito L5 series lever hoists which have an overload limiter that prevents the hoist from excessive overload lifting. The new features of this lever hoist improve operator safety and increase the durability of the hoist.

Bellambie Mining & Industrial will demonstrate its new test trailer, designed for visual inspections and accurate load testing of lifting equipment up to 7 tons. The company is registered with the Department of Labour as a Lifting Machinery Entity (LME) and offers a specialised proofloading facility to ensure that lifting equipment complies with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Mining Act.

International interest

“It is exciting that this year’s show has attracted such a high level of international interest. This shows confidence and interest in our market. The international exhibitors see South Africa as a developing country with growth potential and a very strong player in the mining industry”. says John Kaplan, Group CEO, Specialised Exhibitions. “It is a great place for visitors to find out about the latest developments, technologies, trends, products and services in these industries.”
