BMG’s diffuser drive sweetener

September 2010 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

The Dorstener diffuser drive gearbox, which had been in operation at a sugar mill in KZN for nearly 20 years, was transported to the BMG Drives repair facility in Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) for a full bearing and seal change during the recent off-crop season. “This is the first time the drive has been removed from the diffuser’s drive head since installation. However the attached in-line planetary drive has been removed and inspected annually since it was installed 20 years ago” said Clive Northcote, BMG Drives works manager for KZN.

Specialist reconditioning and repair work on the diffuser drive included a complete bearing and seal change, as well as reconditioning dressing and machining of the gearing assembly.

Throughout Africa

BMG’s service teams carry out gearbox maintenance inspections in the off-crop season throughout the African sugar industry. The company has refurbished drive gearboxes from Sudan which were originally installed in the 1960s.This reconditioning project was referred by a sugar mill in Sudan. The gearboxes typically have a torque of 600 000 Nm.

The reconditioning involved the installation of new Fenner grid input couplings and Esco gear output couplings, as well as bearings and seals. With the implementation of the correct maintenance programme, the service life of these units will be extended by a further 15 years.

Equipment

The BMG Drives facility is equipped for the reverse engineering of gearbox components and accessories and also handles precision machining of components such as shafts, sleeves, pulleys, couplings, brake drums and crane wheels. There is also access to laser alignment equipment for complete drive packs. This ensures proper chain-sprocket interaction, defeating the system misalignment which is a major cause of premature wear on chains, sprockets, shafts and bearings.

BMG also offers technical guidance regarding the selection of the appropriate gearbox and its correct maintenance procedures, as well as undertaking on-site inspections, trouble shooting and commissioning of installations.
