A slurry pump for arduous conditions

January 2011 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Alert Pumpmor, part of the Becker Group of Companies, manufactures a range of slurry pumps designed for use in arduous underground and surface applications in mining, sewage and industrial applications.

“These heavy duty submersible pumps, which ensure efficient operation and extended service life, can be manufactured with SABS IEC 60079-1 flameproof accreditation, which is an important safety feature,” says Fanie Nel, product manager, Alert Pumpmor . “The company employs a fully integrated ISO 9001:2008 quality management system as part of its dedicated design, manufacturing, testing and repair facility.”

Included in this range of submersible slurry pumps are extra heavy duty units designed for demanding applications. CTMS models, which efficiently eliminate clogging problems, are able to handle solids ranging from 60 mm to 228 mm and specific gravities up to 1,8.

These high performance, large solids, slurry pumps are also available in horizontal and vertical configurations. This offers a flexible drive arrangement, including direct coupled, overhead- adjustable, or Z-adjustable belt drives.

The model HS (hydro-solids) and VHS (vertical hydro-solids) pumps, with capacities up to 636 m³/h, can achieve pressures up to 400 kPa and can handle solids up to. 150 mm. Smaller models in this range handle specific gravities up to 1,8 and larger models handle specific gravities up to 1,5.

The VJC medium duty vertical slurry pump is designed for applications that include mining, milling, power plants, refineries and water and pulp. The horizontal unit (model JC) has an adjustable impeller clearance, grease or oil lubricated bearings and an optional slide rail assembly. Features of the submersible slurry pump (model JTMS) include overhead protection relays, heavy duty bearings, maximum component interchangeability and a removal suction liner.

All vertical spindles and submersible units also offer optional mechanical and hydraulic agitation that ensures highly efficient solids pumping and sump cleaning capabilities.

Alert Pumpmor pumps, which are manufactured locally to stringent OEM specifications, are backed by a test and repair service. Because all components are locally manufactured, these pumps are readily available and a large stock holding of spares and raw materials ensures timely delivery.

Another advantage of the design of these pumps is that the majority of spares are completely interchangeable. This reduces inventory management costs and simplifies on-site repairs. The pumps also offer substantial power consumption savings.
