Low voltage alternators that comply

March 2011 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Leroy-Somer has launched a new range of low voltage alternators that comply with all requirements of the global generator market.

“This versatile new LSA 40 compact alternator, which is the most lightweight unit in its range of power ratings, is characterised by high efficiency levels, significant power savings and more electric power from the same motor,” says managing director of Leroy Somer SA, Grant Robertson. “It also has low reactance and a high capacity for starting electric motors, and is able to withstand disturbance from distorting loads“ he continues.

The flexibility of the new design means that the unit is interchangeable with alternators from the ranges it replaces. The basic universal unit can be adapted to meet specific requirements by the simple addition of extra modules and accessories readily available in South Africa.

The LSA 40, which forms part of Leroy Somer’s Partner low voltage series, is a 4-pole three phase unit, with power ratings of 50 Hz–1500 min-1: 10 to 23 kVA and 60 Hz–1800 min-1: 12,5 to 28 kVA. This alternator is also available in a dedicated, single phase version.

There are two field excitation versions to suit exact requirements - the Shunt, with a high starting capacity, and Arep, also with a high starting capacity and short circuit capacity.

The LSA 40, available in a single bearing or dual bearing version, is simple to install and has a modular terminal box for ease of access to the connections and the automatic voltage regulator.

Partner alternators have a polyurethane or epoxy finishing paint. A standard impregnation varnish conforming to Class H insulation enables operation in extreme environments. Tropicalised protection on windings and non-machined parts of the rotor improve protection against damp and corrosion.

With an integrated booster, these alternators can withstand load impacts, overloads and short circuits. A standard built-in regulator copes with nonlinear distorting loads and connection bus bars. Reconnectable leads, compatible with all voltages, enable use anywhere in the world.

These robust low voltage alternators can be adapted for various applications in mining, telecommunications, construction, marine, civil engineering and agriculture, as well as commercial and residential sectors.
