Altivar 32 variable speed drive

3rd Quarter 2011 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

With its ultra slim, book-style design and ability to directly attach a self-protected disconnect, the Altivar 32 allows users to mount it side by side and integrate it into tight spaces, thereby minimising wiring and machine costs.

Integrated self-protected disconnect

“The Altivar 32 is the first industrial drive that has the capability to integrate a self-protected disconnect, offering our customers significant time and cost savings,” says Rynhard Davids, VSD product manager at Schneider Electric South Africa. “In addition, this drive has integrated decision capabilities, such as input/output (I/O) event logic, counting and timing functions, further reducing panel space and wiring costs.”

Customise to the application

The drive can operate as the heart of a simple control system and perform functions usually managed by a PLC, which allows users to use Boolean and arithmetical operations, timers, counters, comparators, and short automated sequences to customise the drive to specific machine applications and save on installation components. All of these functions can be programmed using Schneider Electric’s SoMove software, available for free at www.schneider-electric.us/go/drives.

Speed and torque control

Designed to operate without the need for encoder feedback, the Altivar 32 drive delivers exceptional speed and torque control for asynchronous or synchronous AC motors. It also features conformal coating to protect circuit boards from dust, moisture and other airborne contaminants, which allows it to be used in harsh environments.

Bluetooth

To further enhance the user experience, Altivar 32 is embedded with Bluetooth technology, which enables monitoring, viewing and performing machine diagnostics while keeping cabinet doors safely closed. It also includes standard RJ45 connectors for Modbus and CANOpen networks and onboard HMI and navigation wheel for easy adjustments.

Over 150 applications

The Altivar 32 has over 150 application-specific functions. These include elevators for the manufacturing sector such as conveyors, storage and retrieval systems, and handling equipment; packaging; metal processing machinery for bending, welding and cutting; wood-working machines; textiles; and machines with simple control systems, such as scrolling advertising panels and automatic doors.

Energy Efficient

“The Altivar 32 range optimises industrial machines, whilst providing energy savings. These are achieved through the use of synchronous motors in speed control mode, which allows for an energy efficiency of 10% to be realised,” he says.

Safety is paramount

Safety aspects are of the utmost importance and are incorporated as standard. Safety functions include safe torque off, which provides a freewheel stop by eliminating the torque on the motor shaft, as well as safe wiring, which is made simple with a terminal diagram on the inside cover. The safety functions can be used in any combination. Two logic inputs provide redundancy on most of them, hence avoiding the need to use an external safety module.

The Altivar 32 comes with the following certifications: Safety Integrity Level (SIL1, 2 or 3) according to IEC 61508 standard (parts 1 and 2) and Performance Level (PL”d”) according to ISO 13849-1/-2 Category 3. Furthermore, the product’s safely limited speed (SLS) slows down then holds the motor at a predefined speed and causes STO stopping if this speed is exceeded. The SDI function (safe direction) is integrated into SLS.

Cost effective performance

“Challenged by tougher economic conditions, machine builders expect solutions that are easier to use and maintain, but at the same time generate a higher return on investment,” concludes Davids. “By taking advantage of the Altivar 32 drive’s multiple innovative features, OEMs can deliver cost-effective solutions while improving their machine performance.”
