IGBT DC locomotive drives

Third Quarter 2005 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Aztec Electronics is offering its new IGBT loco controller. This controller represents the state-of-the-art with regard to DC loco control and serves to replace the older MOSFET controllers. Aztec's IGBT controller is available in both a single and a dual configuration - the latter allowing for the simultaneous control of two motors. Aztec's IGBT controller has been specifically designed to meet the high demands of underground mining applications. Its rugged construction, high functionality and integrated safety and protection features offer the user a high quality product at a competitive price.

The IGBT controller is manufactured to SABS 1809-2003 and has an operating voltage of 75 to 140 V d.c. and a current, and braking current limit, of 500 A each. Features include: acceleration delay, slip avoidance, fully integrated electronic tachometer, fault condition indicators, handle test facility, modular components, neutral braking, plug braking, rugged opto-switches for speed control, silent stepless operation, speed and battery condition indicators and user programmable (programmer optional).

Safety and protection features incorporated in the controller include: continuous driver detection, current limit, earth leakage monitor, emergency braking, fail safe, neutral detection, over voltage protection, overspeed protection, reverse polarity protection, spike suppression coils, stalled motor protection, thermal protection, under voltage protection and wheel slip protection.

The functionality and safety features make the new IGBT loco controller from Aztec one of the safest, most reliable controllers available on the market today. The product is backed up by Aztec's fully equipped workshop and test facility.
