Tough draw wire encoders

Third Quarter 2005 Other technologies

Kübler is offering a range of industrial draw wire encoders. These rugged transducers are a cost effective way to measure linear displacements from 1 to 40 m in demanding industrial environments. Common applications include crane operation, elevators, forklifts and scissor jacks. With an expected life of up to a million cycles, these encoders are well suited to these harsh environments.

Draw wire transducers use a drum on which a measuring wire is wound. A rotary encoder or potentiometer is connected to the spring-loaded drum that automatically winds up and retracts the wire, measuring the angular displacement of the drum.

The Mini Draw Wire D5 is available in either 1 or 2 metre lengths with incremental or analog outputs. The longer length units (series D8) are offered in lengths of 2 to 40 m and are available with incremental, absolute or Fieldbus outputs. Virtually any 58 mm Kübler encoder can be installed onto the D8 style Draw wire housing, giving the customer a wide array of solutions for any design requirements. All of the draw wire encoders also have temperature and ageing compensation, as well as short-circuit and reverse polarity protection.
