Hydraulic hose maintenance training

First Quarter 2006 News & events

As a free service to existing and potential clients Genflex Hydraulics offers a training course on hydraulic hose assembly and maintenance to hydraulic hose technicians. The course, which lasts one week, is aimed at ensuring that the product sold to them from Genflex is treated, handled and maintained correctly once delivered to site.

Currently three technicians from Central Africa are in Johannesburg on training at Genflex, where they will receive training on hydraulic hose applications and maintenance such as: threads, couplings, adaptors, brazing, bending of small tubes, specialised tooling, braking systems, problem identification, hose fitting assembly techniques and hose manufacturing processes. Having an on-site testing facility at Genflex also enables the technicians to test the work they have completed to see it if meets the accepted standards, therefore highlighting any imperfect assemblies immediately and enabling re-training to be conducted.

David Michelle, Genflex director, said: "It is crucial that hydraulic hose supplied by us is handled correctly. We advise all of our clients to consider sending technicians to undergo training and encourage them to undertake a refresher course some 18 months later. On-site hydraulic hose technicians need to have reached a certain level of competence to be effective in their handling of hydraulic hose. If need be, repeat training is offered until the technician successfully completes the verbal and practical test and is awarded his course certificate of competence.

"Currently there are no officially established training standards for the hydraulic hose industry. This is currently being reviewed by Merseta, and once they have established the industry training specifications, Genflex will adjust its programme to fall in line with Merseta's which will then be accepted by all players in the hydraulic hose sector. The confidence gained by the technicians after the week long training is immense, and the training is viewed as very much a skills development opportunity. In addition it also ensures positive communications between Genflex and its clients," said Michelle.
