Schneider/EMAC joint venture

First Quarter 2006 News & events

Responding to a demand from South African end-users to provide a complete drives system, guaranteed for longevity, Schneider Electric South Africa and EMAC, have formed an official joint-venture agreement for a motor/drive package that affords users the latest technology.

"For many years Schneider has utilised its Altivar range of drives and soft starters in conjunction with the VEM brand motor," says Schneider VSD product manager, Derain Pillay. "The VEM motors are controlled by Telemecanique Altivar drives in the most strenuous applications in industry - proving the quality of the combination. Many countries, particularly the developing nations, face a crisis over the shortage of trained and experienced electrical engineers. That is why we have made it a priority to apply to local South African needs the new technologies."

With the know-how and expertise of Schneider Electric and EMAC, this joint venture is also set to address the market requirements of minimised downtime and higher return on investment. Reduced time to market is ensured by guaranteed solutions, predefined before engineering and installation.

EMAC (VEM) is offering motors for all types of variable speed applications, such as K21R voltages >420 V, KU.R series - voltages 420 to 500 V and KV.R 500 V to 690 V. Special insulation methods have been used to provide longevity against strenuous variable speed drives (VSD) conditions.

It is estimated that both Schneider and EMAC will increase their projected turnover by 25% through this joint venture, due to a large existing distribution base in South Africa and the African continent ready to adopt this level of technology.

Schneider Electric South Africa now officially the sole distributor for the EMAC VEM, AEM and CEMP range of motors - as packaged with the Altivar and Altistart motor control range. EMAC is now able to offer motors in standard format, VSD versions, slip-ring rotor, roller table high torque motors - medium and high-voltage, and able to provide customised solutions. The new ATV 71 drive and a 132 kW VEM motor are already proving their quality attributes, replacing a DC system at Parmalat's Port Elizabeth-based plant. This installation has been a huge success for the combination and Parmalat has now opted to make this solution its standard for all future applications.
