Compact four-quadrant drives

First Quarter 2006 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Sprint Electric's 340XRi, 680XRi and 1220XRi DC drives offer a suitable solution to many four quadrant regenerative drive applications. "Sprint Electric's Regen drives offer a quick and easy solution for motors up to 1,8 kW/2hp," says Mike Cronin, managing director of Elquip Solutions - the South African distributor for Sprint Electric's products.

XRi drives are able to regenerate energy back into the mains supply under braking - without the need for expensive, complex intermediate storage, resistive dumping or additional power bridges. The fully regenerative drives provide superior energy efficiency in comparison to conventional dynamic braking.

"It is the DC motors' ability to run in reverse, as a generator for rapid braking applications, that is one of its most interesting features - particularly as global attention shifts towards energy conservation and maximisation," says Cronin.

An additional feature of the drives is that with four-quadrant operation, the torque can be reversed very gently - or almost instantaneously - as required. Although compact in size, the 340XRi, 680XRi and 1220 XRi offers all the system functionality normally associated with other Sprint Electric products. The three models in the range allow for an easy upgrade path for those DC drive applications requiring extra power.

Elquip Solutions supplies Sprint Electric's range of drives up to the 260 kilowatt drives to the South African industry because the company was impressed by the advanced features that come as standard. This is the case in even the lowest specification power drives, making them suitable for simple, single drive installations, right through to the most complex multidrive systems.
