Filtration solutions

Second quarter 2006 Other technologies

Donaldson Filtration is offering a line of products that is well suited to Africa's challenging environments. Applications that can benefit from these air filtration solutions may be found in transport, agriculture and mining, industrial air for the manufacturing sector, or specialised filtration media for cutting-edge industrial applications.

Filters protect and enhance human working environments on one hand and extend the operating life of vehicles, machinery and equipment on the other. Donaldson's technological success in this arena can be attributed to a combination of particulate and chemical filtration technology with other disciplines, including fluid dynamics, structural analysis and acoustics.

Hydraulic products

Donaldson develops, manufactures, and markets a full line of industrial hydraulic filters for the protection of machinery and components in hundreds of applications - in the factory and on heavy duty-mobile equipment. Its heavy-duty high-pressure filters sit behind pumps and other prime movers to protect critical hydraulic components such as cylinders, motors and valves. All contain the company's Synteq synthetic filter media, specially developed by Donaldson for high efficiency liquid filtration. Working pressures range from 13,75 to 42 MPa, static pressures from 31 up to 83 MPa.

Donaldson's Duramax, among the highest-rated spin-on style filters available, are most often used in return-line positions. As spin-ons, they are particularly well-suited for duplex circuits. Donaldson Synteq and cellulose media is available. Duramax working pressures range from 2,4 to 6,9 MPa; static pressures from 5,5 to 13,8 MPa.

Low pressure filters are the most commonly used type of filter in hydraulic circuits, used as return line filters in applications with typical working pressures up to 1 MPa and static pressure up to 2 MPa. Donaldson offers flow/pressure combinations to fit most applications. Continuous filtrations of bulk fluids through dedicated off-line circuits or kidney loops helps keep fuel, oil and lubricants clean.

Accessories

Accessories for hydraulic lines and reservoirs include filter service indicators, pressure gauges, test points assemblies, valves, flanges, reservoir level gauges, sight glasses, a variety of tank and filler breathers, caps, vents, plugs, strainers, diffusers, magnets, etc. Donaldson is believed to offer the broadest selection of hydraulic replacement cartridges and coreless elements in the world.

Pneumatic/compressed air filtration offering

The company also delivers a complete system of filtration and separation products for compressed air systems. Its technology in the field of compressed air, gas, and fluid separation extends from the compressor room to all points of use in the factory. Components are designed and matched for optimal performance, while its engineering service leads new products from concept to reality. The range consists of compressed air dryers, compressed air filters, oil/water separators, drain valves, compressed air (Ultrafilter) range and also process water chillers. The core strengths upon which Donaldson's success has been built are applied technology, customer relationships and global presence.

History

In 1915, Donaldson started as a three-man shop manufacturing simple air cleaners for farm tractors. Today, the company has expanded its product portfolio and grown into a worldwide corporation with over 11 000 employees. The acquisition of Torit Company in the early 1970s got Donaldson into the dust collection business, which was further expanded in 1987 with the acquisition of the Day Division of Carter-Day, another leader in the dust collection market. Donaldson's industrial air filtration technology is now applied to a variety of industries and environments, including: welding, pharmaceuticals, wood- working, chemical, metal fabrication, foundries, food processing and composites.

During the 1970s, Donaldson applied its technology to create innovative filtration solutions to clean inlet air for gas turbines. Today, the company creates and manufactures air filtration systems for stationary gas turbines and other rotating equipment used in power generation, oil and gas production and transmission and petrochemical industries.

The emergence of computer disk drive technology in the 1980s prompted Donaldson to apply its disciplines to micro-filtration problems. Resulting technology has enabled the company to provide new products for diverse applications such as clean rooms, semiconductor processing and automobile and aircraft passenger cabins.

So far, the new century has been a good one for Donaldson. The diversification, along with strategic acquisitions, has resulted in consistently strong financial performance and has enabled it to expand and grow its business. Donaldson believes that its technological leadership, combined with strong customer relationships and a global presence, will keep it at the forefront of its markets for years to come.
