Aseptic range of motors

Second quarter 2006 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

SEW Eurodrive, suppliers of geared, servo and electric motors, speed reducers, variable speed drives and servo controllers, recently launched a new range of Aseptic motors specifically for the food and beverage industry. SEW Eurodrive is known to be the drive of choice for the food and beverage industry where product reliability and extensive back up ensures maximum production time.

SEW Eurodrive is a company that develops customised products and systems in order to support its client's success and create lasting added value, coming up with the optimum solution. Urs Roos, managing director, SEW Eurodrive, firmly believes, "People do not need products, they need solutions."

The last few years has seen a large increase in the export of goods to foreign countries. This has forced South African exporters to adhere to stricter legislation laid down by South African authorities and by countries in Europe as well as the USA. In the food and beverage industry high demands are placed on hygiene in sensitive production areas. Often, regulations stipulate a completely sterile environment. The drive solutions used to date have made the necessary cleaning processes in the production plant even more difficult. Standard motors are usually equipped with cooling fins and fans where dirt can collect and where it can often not be completely removed due to limited accessibility, resulting in the accumulation of germs and bacteria.

SEW Eurodrive has responded to this requirement by launching the Aseptic range of gear motors, which were introduced to the market for the first time at a recent trade show. Helical, parallel shaft helical, helical bevel and helical worm geared motors in Aseptic designs are easy to clean thanks to their smooth surfaces which help prevent the build up of bacteria. The absence of a cooling fan and fan cowl eliminate areas that are traditionally difficult to clean. These drives can be coated with special paints in OS1 to OS4 specification to give maximum protection for the various types of chemicals used in the cleaning process. The motor enclosure protection is IP 69K with thermal classification F complete with TF temperature sensors as wells as IS connectors. Motors are available from 0,25 to 1,5 kW continuous duty and 0,55 to 3 kW 25% intermittent duty.

The Aseptic gear motors of the DAS series meet enclosure IP69K to DIN 40050-9 as standard and can therefore withstand aggressive cleaning chemicals and water temperature of up to 80°C. These motors can be directly coupled to the existing SEW Eurodrive gearbox range. SEW Eurodrive can also fit Aseptic motors onto its standard range of geared motors which have had additional surface treatment and protection to withstand corrosive environments.

Systems can therefore be designed and equipped individually according to the hygienic design regardless of whether it involves operation in production, filling or packaging. SEW Eurodrive Aseptic motors meet the operating requirements in the standard hygienic range and can also be used if there is a need for resistance to aggressive cleansing agents and disinfectants.
