PTO motor saves fuel

Second Quarter 2004 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Linde of Germany, a major international supplier of mobile hydraulic equipment, is now offering its series 02 motor for articulated dump trucks, loaders, forklifts etc. The Linde motor is available from hydraulic and pneumatic company Ernest Lowe - sole local distributors of Linde hydraulic products in South Africa.

"In line with the Linde dictum of simple, highly-effective solutions to old problems, the new Linde motor will give you up to 30% less fuel consumption during goods handling, and between 30 to 50% less fuel consumption during roading even with a higher travel speed," states Ernest Lowe hydraulic product manager, Chris Sherwood.

The 02 motor converts engine speed directly to wheel speed, reducing transmission components and lessening the influence of windage. The motors can be axle, front or side frame mounted, with a universal shaft coupling and brake package attached. The high conversion PTO drive has a double motor and is available in various PTO combinations to maximise placement and efficiency. Enhanced transmission performance allows the operator to use less and gain more, drive power usage is lessened as speed increases and fuel consumption is substantially reduced.

The superior low speed behaviour of the HMV 105-02 offers smoother relative torque at speeds in the range 2 rpm/350 rev than conventional bent-axis motors. Various transmission concepts are available, such as the basic 75 cc pump with 105 cc motor and gearbox, or the single motor PTO with 75 cc pump and 210 cc motor, or 2 x 135 cc motors at targets (see table).

With hydraulic motors, speed potential is not the decisive application factor; low-speed behaviour becomes more important. The highest performance improvement potential is in the system concept itself, not in the component efficiencies. Space/component/fuel savings can pay for far more than cubic inches and the Linde approach adds new values such as noise reduction and classic simplicity of design. In short, the new Linde series 02 PTO motor:

* Consumes less space.

* Uses less components and part numbers (lowering maintenance costs).

* The cooler may be downsized.

* Consumes less fuel (greater cost efficiency).

* Is quieter.

* Drives better - with more direct power conversion.
