Asynchronous linear motors

Third Quarter 2004 Electrical switching & drive systems & components Access Control & Identity Management

Linear motors are direct drives that translate electrical energy into immediate linear motion without any mechanical transmission elements. The linear motor, basically an asynchronous or synchronous motor opened out flat, produces the required forward thrust without the usual intermediate mechanisms, ie, belts, chains, rack-and-pinions, leadscrews etc, or gear units. They are particularly suited for the materials handling market where they can provide continuous and safe operations at high speed.

SEW-Eurodrive produces a linear motor, available in two sizes - the DLD 200-7 and the DLD 400-6 with forward rated thrusts of 200 N and 400 N, and power ratings of 0,4 and 0,8 kW respectively. They are particularly compact and space saving, easy to install, and simple in design - which is free from wear, maintenance free, offering quiet in operation and a cost-effective means of providing forward motion.

The SEW design consists of a primary (short-stator double-primary design) and a custom-designed moving secondary to suit specific application requirements. The mechanical design of the secondary can be very simple, with the reaction plate made of aluminium as the most cost-effective solution. The benefits of the design are high force density and the absence of magnetic attraction forces between primary and secondary. When de-energized, the SEW linear motor features freewheeling characteristics. High-precision closed-loop speed control is provided by SEW frequency inverters tailored to this specific task.
