Bellambie wins R2,5 million Australian export order

Bellambie Mining & Industrial has won a R2,5 million export order to supply complete head and tail rope sets for a multirope friction winder at the new Telfer Gold Mine in Western Australia.

Telfer, part of the Newcrest Mining Group, is expected to be one of Australia's largest gold mines, with estimates of a 24-year life at 800 000 ounces a year. The order, won against stiff international competition, was placed by Bellambie's Sydney-based Australian distributor, IPS.

Bellambie is the leading supplier of mine winding and guide rope attachments to the South African mining industry and provides a full in-house design and manufacturing facility at its Alrode, Gauteng plant. Its multirope systems have been fitted to the mine's ground-mounted friction winders, which operate two rope-guided skips in a 7 m diameter concrete lined shaft. The payload is 34,5 t.

"Head ropes on a multirope friction winder require a means of adjusting their lengths to maintain equality between the loads applied to each rope attached to the conveyances," says Bellambie marketing director, Ken Quick. "This order also included the Bellambie HAL-type hydraulic adjusting linkage that provides equal tension on all the head ropes. Our guide rope attachments incorporate continuous tension monitoring and automatic tension compensation, which allows for temperature changes and ensures optimal guide rope tensions."

All Bellambie rope attachments comply with government mining regulations and meet or exceed mining house specifications. Materials used in manufacture are tested for fatigue strength, ductility and toughness, with the steel ultrasonically examined for imperfections before and after machining.

After manufacture the equipment is proof load tested and then subjected to further ultrasonic and magnetic crack detection to ensure it is completely free from defects that would impair its safety and performance. The picture shows Bellambie's HAL type linkage which formed part of the R2,5 million Australian order.
