Convenient Cartesian motion system

Fourth Quarter 2004 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Take a simple standardised linear motion system, combine it with a motor, controls, connection elements, cables, and a dose of its experience and the result is a factory built, pre-configured 3-axis motion system that meets specific user needs, says Rexroth.

In the past, customers had to order a variety of linear components, and then integrate them into the required structure. The new Rexroth Cartesian Motion System (CMS) is unique in that the customer can use a single part number to order a complete and matched Cartesian System with 1, 2 or 3 axes. The user is able to select the correct combination for the application from a wide range of axis configurations.

There are several advantages to this approach: The entire planning phase is greatly shortened and the assembly time is virtually eliminated - a significant time saving is therefore realised. In addition, the individual high-precision components are not shipped piece by piece but more conveniently, as an entire unit.

"The CMS is suitable for payloads up to 25 kg, speeds up to 1,0 m/s, acceleration rates to 15 m/s², and with stroke lengths up to 1 m in the x-axis, 700 mm in the y-axis and 800 mm in the z-axis (depending on axis configuration and size), it is ideal for applications such as pick-and-place, engraving and motion control. It also delivers optimum running properties and is extremely robust for its size," enthuses Tectra's general manager, Emil Berning.

The system includes the Rexroth CMS with servomotor and drive, fieldbus interface, cable management, as well as complete positioning or path control. The set-up effort for these pre-configured Cartesian Systems is much less than expected resulting in less time, lower costs and ultimately less stress.

In meeting increased market demand for complete package solutions from a single source, even for the most difficult applications, Rexroth supplies these motion systems and also offers matching products for building the associated frames and safety enclosures for the systems.

Available with standard interface options like Profibus-DP, SERCOS-Interface, DeviceNet and CANopen, Rexroth's multiple axis motion system easily integrates into different automation networks, thus solving interface problems. Wherever Rexroth products are used in South Africa, Tectra Automation undertakes design, assembly, supply, repair and aftersales support for specific applications.
