Electronic nameplate saves on data entry at commissioning

First Quarter 2005 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Drive electronics must be matched exactly to the connected motor to ensure optimum operation of the drive system. In the case of SEW Eurodrive systems, all motor data is entered into the project planning software Movitools and stored in the Movidrive and Movidrive compact drive inverters. Movitools uses the motor data to calculate the optimal parameters of the control loops and thus matches the drive inverter to the connected motor.

The drive inverter now automatically finds information about relevant servo motor data by means of an 'electronic' nameplate. The electronic nameplate for SEW drives is used in conjunction with the Hiperface encoder system by Stegmann. Currently, the function of the electronic nameplate is realised for CM, CT/CV and DS servo motors. A precondition is that the motor be equipped with a Hiperface encoder:

* Sine/cosine track signals: high resolution for speed and precision.

* Integrated absolute encoder for positioning applications without reference travel.

* Integrated EEPROM to store the electronic nameplate.

* The function of the electronic nameplate is realised in the MCH unit series.

All data of the complete gearmotor is already stored in the electronic nameplate when it leaves the factory. Such data includes information regarding the motor, operating information, brake information and order information.

Easy installation

Startup is facilitated by Movidrive compact MCH and Movitools 3.00. The new functionality provided by the electronic nameplate enables Movitools to identify the connected gearmotor automatically without the user having to enter rated values and motor data. Some data of the machine being driven must still be entered - but the drive will then automatically optimise control parameters. The electronic nameplate also contains information that is not mentioned on the nameplate attached to the unit. Some of this would include the number of teeth of individual gear unit ratios, which is important for certain applications such as synchronous operation and rotary positioning.

The electronic nameplate thus provides data transparency that even includes the motor. This means that higher-level visualisation systems can access not only parameters and data of the connected drive inverters but also the corresponding data of the gearmotors. The benefits for the customer include:

* Automated startup of the servo drive without having to enter data.

* Reduced startup time.

* No knowledge of the motor technology is required.

* Accurate speed and position control.
