Self-supporting steam, water and oil rotary unions

First Quarter 2005 Other technologies

Johnson's SX rotary joint provides a positive seal between stationary piping and rotating cylinders. New sealing technology brings with it extended seal life, and increased reliability and performance. Based on the S range of self-support rotary unions, which are used extensively on low RPM machines, SX joint applications include steam, water or oil heated colanders and are also used on the drying drums found in the corrugated, textile, foods, plastics and steel industries.

The new design, which sets this joint apart from others, introduces an additional nipple guide bearing to enhance support on the nipple shaft, and instead of the usual tension configuration, the seal ring is now arranged in compression, which effectively extends the life span of the joint.

Higher RPM range

Johnson water, air and hydraulics division, have joined forces with Fluiten, a leading manufacturer of mechanical seals, to create the Johnson-Fluiten company. This merger has resulted in a range of superior bearing and mechanical seal rotary unions designed for higher RPM machines requiring low torque rotary unions.

The Johnson-Fluiten range, or the RH series have a unique feature - the quick replacement device (QRD) - which allows users to service the mechanical seal without removing the rotary union from the machine. This is simply done by loosening four bolts, which consequently splits the body at the seal, the seal can then be removed, a new one slipped in, and the housing is then re-bolted.

According to Kevin Hoy, GM for Yale Engineering Products Division in South Africa, "This whole operation takes less than five minutes, and is an absolute boon to any industry where maintenance stoppages can result in major loss of income. In addition to the QRD, the mechanical seals are situated outside of the fluid flow, ensuring that there can be no blocking, corrosion or flow loss caused by the spring." The seal loading is a three-spring arrangement, offering an even pressure distribution, ensuring that the seal face is kept under constant and even loading. Yale Industrial Products is the sole southern African distributor for Johnson in industry and corrugating manufacturing (excluding paper mills). The company offers backup and service for Johnson products countrywide.
