Retro-fitted gearboxes offer up to 98% efficiency

Third Quarter 2006 Shaft power components

SEW Eurodrive supplies a range of gearboxes that offer to improve energy efficiency when coupled to the existing range of electric motors, offering efficiency of between 94 and 98%. They are particularly suitable for: materials handling technology and process engineering applications; the automotive industry; food and beverage production; the construction materials industry; wood, plastic, paper and textile processing as well as logistics, transportation and traffic industries.

The gear units can be equipped with optional components, such as motor mounting platforms, swing bases, torque limiting or centrifugal couplings. Geared motor combinations with AC motors, AC brake motors and synchronous as well as asynchronous servomotors offer millions of possible combinations regarding performance, speed and design thanks to the modular concept of the SEW components. The company's Movitrac LTE, Movitrac B and Movidrive 61B inverters provide efficient and effective electronic control of the complete range of SEW motors from 0,12 kW to 132 kW.

The advantages of using SEW geared motors are: high power density, low power to weight ratio and low unit volume; a high overload capacity and reliability; large permitted overhung loads; a long maintenance-free service life; a large number of finely graded ratios per size; and as multistage gear units, up to six gear stages providing the lowest possible output speeds. They have an output torque of up to 1,4 Nm-50 000 Nm and are available in a power range from 0,12 to 200 kW.

"SEW has improved on the DT 63 and the DT100 frame motor's efficiency by introducing the DFR 63 and the DFV100 frame motors in SA. This range complies with the new European efficiency regulations. The other frame sizes are to follow shortly. In addition to our energy efficient mechanical products, energy can also be saved on pump or fan applications with the introduction of a SEW AC inverter. By slowing these motors down in reduced demand periods, the power consumption is dramatically reduced," comments John Hainsworth, Cape Town branch manager and resident geared motor specialist.
