All round motor protection relay

Fourth Quarter 2006 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

A low voltage motor protection relay is available from NewElec with a 150 x 85 mm footprint that includes its own current transformers and an earth leakage core balance within the housing.

The relay accommodates a full house of protection features such as protection against sustained and cyclic overload conditions with variable thermal class and full memory, start and running stall, load loss, earth leakage, earth fault, short circuit and phase rotation conditions. The relay also protects against over and under voltage, unbalance and phase loss. Apart from the overloading protection, every one of these features may be individually deselected or adjusted for trip and time thresholds to suit the exact application.

The relay features five digital inputs that accept field supply voltages in the range 24 to 220 V a.c. or d.c. The latter can be linked through independent solid-state timers to two programmable output relays. A useful truth table made available through the free front-end software permits some clever configurations. The relay is also equipped with three PTC temperature inputs. Two additional output relays are pre-allocated as main trip and potentially high-energy fault clearing relays. In this manner, the relay automatically distinguishes between normal and potentially hazardous fault currents. When the latter arise, a specific relay contact closes to energise the shunt mechanism of a back-up circuit breaker.

The user has the ability to attach a field-bus communications module to suit Profibus DP, Modbus RTU or Canbus protocols to further enhance the versatility of this product.

In addition, the relay time and date stamps the last four faults, and when connected to a computer, it can record the three phase currents, thermal capacity, and line and phase voltages for further analysis using Excel.
