HFT installs major filters at local steel producer

Fourth Quarter 2006 Other technologies

Hytec Fluid Technology has completed a multimillion rand contract for the supply of two automatic back-flushing filters to a major local steel producer.

The Autofilt RF3 filters from Hydac have been installed on a high-pressure water descaling system using 18" (45,7 cm) pipes and are used to filter 1650 cubic metres per hour. The world-class filters protect the high-pressure pumps downstream. Having to fulfil such a crucial role, the client placed specific emphasis on operating efficiency and long-term reliability in selecting Hydac's RF3 filters.

Particle contamination in operating fluids accelerates the rate of wear of system components, pipes and valves, and often leads to their premature breakdown. The RF3 is a self-cleaning system for extracting particles from low-viscosity fluids. Its main applications are in the filtration of industrial water. Its robust construction and automatic back-flushing capability make a major contribution to operational reliability and reduce operating and maintenance costs considerably.

During the design of the filter, up-to-date methods of flow simulation were used. The new conical shape of slotted tube filter elements in stainless steel provide effective filtration of the contamination particles with filtration ratings of 50 to 3000 μm. The level of contamination in the elements is monitored by differential pressure measurement. If the filter reaches a certain pressure drop, automatic cleaning begins whereby all the filter elements are cleaned with their own fluid one after another, without interrupting the flow of filtrate. The special shape and configuration of the conical filter elements allows even flow, resulting in low-pressure drop and complete cleaning of the elements.

The advantages are fewer back-flushing cycles and lower loss of back-flushing fluid, as well as a freely selectable control parameters and flange positions, with a large number of equipment and material permutations for easy integration into a wide variety of processes.
