Festo has launched a new range of freely-positionable stepper-motors that are an inexpensive alternative to EMMS-AS servomotors. These new 'servo light' electrical drives offer fully controllable motion, operating reliability and options for torque and force control. Until recently, this level of functionality was only possible with the use of servomotors. However, the latter offer far more functionality than is necessary for simple handing jobs.
The new EMMS-ST stepper motors, together with an encoder and appropriate CMMS-ST controller, cater to the demand for a cost-effective, yet versatile, electric drive solution, particularly in sectors such as the packaging industry. In closed-loop operation, the CMMS-ST controller functions as a complete servo-drive package and directs the stepper-motors by controlling current, speed and position. As a result multi-axis stepper-motor solutions can be fully synchronised.
The CMMS-ST can be connected to a CANopen system and can also be configured for use with Profibus or DeviceNet. A mains filter and a braking resistor are integrated, and an SD card serves as a portable memory medium for parameters. The combination of the EMMS-ST stepper-motor and the Festo modular axis system provides a solution for price sensitive applications with a load range of up to 6,5 Nm.
