Mechanical and Mechatronic students get geared up

Third Quarter 2007 News & events

"There must be a sound balance between theory and practice." These were the words of Prof Anton Basson, chair-person of the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University, during the handing over of five complete geared motors, with a variety of gearbox layouts, by SEW Eurodrive.

The geared motors will be used in the Machine Design and Mechatronics modules of the University's Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering programmes. Students registered for these modules study the design of gearboxes and the application of geared motors in mechanical and mechatronic systems. The donation will afford these students the opportunity of hands-on experience.

"Research is the basis for continual improvement of the theoretical base, while the support from leading industrial companies is an essential part of providing students with exposure to international best practices in engineering. There is therefore great value for our students in having access to examples of gearboxes designed and manufactured by SEW Eurodrive," says Prof Basson.

John Hainsworth, Cape Town branch manager of SEW Eurodrive, said that it was a great pleasure to help the University. "We would like to continue and extend our cooperation with the University," he said.
