Hytec Group focuses on training

Third Quarter 2007 News & events

With the growing skills shortage in the country, many companies are finding it difficult to recruit the appropriately trained technical personnel. With this in mind, the Hytec Group, a market leader in drive and control technology, has renewed its commitment to training by upgrading and revamping its training centre.

Situated at Hytec's Spartan offices, the training centre consists of specialised equipment, including computer equipment, training rigs, and presentations screens.

"We have experienced at first hand the widening skills gap in the fluid power industry where there is a definite lack of qualified artisans," says Willem Gijzelaar, marketing manager, Hytec Holdings. "As a Group with extensive resources and experience, we decided to place special emphasis on training, including apprentice and post-apprentice courses. We are also looking at adding product-specific training in the future."

Gijzelaar notes that this commitment is evident not only in the updated training centre, but also in the recent appointment of a dedicated group training officer - Allen van Gent.

"Allen is responsible for the co-ordination of all technical and non-technical training, as well as national product training for customers."

The focus of the new training initiatives is to offer both practical and theoretical courses. The courses last three days and only 12 students are accepted into each programme to ensure trainers are able to spend sufficient time with learners.

Two courses are currently on offer: Basic Hydraulics and Basic Pneumatics. Both courses are specifically designed to include the function and application of different components and are linked to SAFPA (South Africa Fluid Power Association) specifications.

The Basic Hydraulics programme focuses on the theory of hydraulics, symbols, pumps and motors, valve theory, cylinders, filtration and contamination, basic fault finding and trouble shooting, accumulators, and basic designing and building.

The Basic Pneumatics course covers theory of pneumatics valves, air preparation, symbols, cylinders, circuit designs, and building of systems.

The courses are also available in centres nationwide and can be implemented at customers' premises as part of a customised in-house training programme.
