The modular mechatronics handling systems that Festo System Solutions uses for its custom-built handling systems are characterised by fast cycle times and flexibility. Pneumatics and electrical engineering are both important in providing effective solutions. Festo's HME electrical handling axis is the counterpart to the HMP-B pneumatic linear handling module and offers reduced design costs with high precision, flexibility and dynamic response.
The Festo HME electrical handling axis and SFC-LAC positioning controller
The electrical handling axis comprises a linear motor, displacement encoder, reference sensor, and precise and highly loadable guide in a compact assembly. The handling axis has an external position controller which is suitable for field use and includes built-in power electronics. The HME demonstrates its strengths in a pick-and-place unit, a linear or a three-dimensional gantry. Thanks to its built-in linear motor and high performance density (force-to-volume), it facilitates the creation of space-saving handling systems.

Precise operation
The axis performs well when carrying out joining tasks with low tolerances in precision mechanics - such as the accurate insertion of fragile workpieces. In such applications it attains a repetition accuracy of ±0,015 mm. The device permits a high degree of configurability to suit it to a specific task. Position, acceleration, speed, and force parameters as well as up to 31 different travel profiles ensure ease of movement during small-series production and when handling varying sizes of work pieces. Thanks to a backlash-free ball bearing guide and a high-precision linear motor drive unit, precision machines can be designed more economically using the HME.
Speed control
A dynamic which is otherwise the preserve of pneumatic drive units is made possible by the integrated three-phase linear motor - developed, patented and produced by Festo. With a permitted top speed of 3 m/s, the electrical handling axis enables highly dynamic machines to achieve higher productivity.
Manfred Merklinger Werkzeug- und Maschinenbau, a German builder of special purpose machines, selected the HME for integration into a system for the automotive supply industry in which minute springs have to be attached to a miniature motor. Here the axis demonstrates its precision and speed. "The force must not exceed 20 N when the springs are being pressed in," explained Josef Blank from the design department for special purpose machines at Merklinger.
Package solution
The SFC-LAC positioning controller completes the HME package. The controller was designed as an external field device, and, thanks to IP54 protection level, it can be installed either in the field or in a control cabinet. The positioning controller is suitable for standalone operation or can be controlled externally via an I/O interface. The ultra-fast teach-in function on site permits an optional display. Convenient configuration and commissioning is also ensured using the FCT (Festo Configuration Tool) via the RS232 interface. With the standard configuration tool for electrical drive units, users simply have to enter the parameters and traversing records.
