Tech tip: CHI Control Components - Select the right MCB trip curve
Third Quarter 2007
Other technologies
Care should be taken in selecting the correct trip curve when specifying miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), especially for commercial or industrial premises where the use of fluorescent lighting, motors and other devices can result in significant inrush currents. The classifications - Type B, C and D - relate to the level of fault current that will produce 'instantaneous' operation (ie operation in less than 10 milliseconds).
* Type B devices: 3-5 times rated current. These are ideally suited to residential and small commercial applications where little or no switching inrush current is anticipated.
* Type C devices: 5-10 times rated current. These are suited to general commercial or industrial applications where low-level inrush currents may be present due to the use of fluorescent or other discharge lighting, small motors and similar devices.
* Type D devices: 10-20 times rated current. These devices should only be used in industrial and other applications where high-level start-up inrush currents are involved, for example with industrial welding equipment, large electric motors and X-ray equipment.
