Automation Taining Council students honoured

Fourth Quarter 2007 News & events

As part of a banquet hosted by the Southern African German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in honour of the visit of Mrs Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Germany, the first six students and four lecturers who were trained as Internationally Certified Profibus Installers under the auspices of the Automation Training Council's initiative, were presented with their certificates in the presence of esteemed guests.

During August 2007, the first 24 students attended the introductory course of the Automation Training Council initiative - the Industrial Data Communications course. Eight students and four lecturers were selected from the successful candidates to attend the second course of this initiative, the Internationally Certified Profibus Installers course at the beginning of September. All four lecturers and six of the eight students passed. These candidates are now Internationally Certified Profibus Installers.

The successful students were Gift Kandukira, Sonja Nienaber, Zelda van Tonder, Tsholofelo Namoto, Judith Setlhabi and Simphiwe Mbatha. The lecturers were Nico Steyn, Gert Potgieter, At Roux and Roger Jenkins.

Gift Kandukira, Sonja Nienaber and Zelda van Tonder were selected to attend the third and last course of this initiative, the Internationally Certified Profibus Engineers course, which will be held in the first week of December 2007.

Profibus is the most widely used industrial communications technology in the world and enables industry to become globally competitive by allowing the seamless integration of industrial automation technologies. It therefore makes sense to train students in the field of Profibus to become 'job' ready, thereby making them immediately employable.

In less than a year, the Automation Training Council will train at least 96 students, country-wide, under its auspices. The Council hopes to continue this initiative indefinitely and urges users of these skills to join in this initiative.
