To promote the consulting engineering industry to young professionals, the South African Association of Consulting Engineers (SAACE) recognises the contribution young engineers make to the industry and to the future of the profession. SEW Eurodrive once again sponsored the Young Engineer of the Year award in the recently held SAACE Glenrand MIB Engineering Excellence Awards.
The winner of this award was Michelle Kruger from Goba Consulting Engineers. Kruger holds a doctorate in Civil Engineering and has a passion for the water discipline of civil engineering. She has presented numerous conference papers and been published in local technical media. Kruger is currently completing the FIDIC 2007 Management Training Programme for Young Professionals and will attend the 2007 Annual FIDIC Conference, which takes place in Singapore, courtesy of SEW Eurodrive.

SEW has made a firm commitment to be involved in developing engineering skills in South Africa. "Our business is run by engineers for engineers, and the current shortage of skills has the potential of having a huge impact on future business," comments Urs Roos, MD for SEW Eurodrive South Africa. SEW Eurodrive worldwide is part of this initiative to develop skills.
SEW has a Drive Academy which is essentially a Drive Engineering University in Bruchsal, Germany. Internationally the company is committed to training and skills development as well.
"We are delighted that Michelle came out tops. She really impressed the judges with her exuberance and passion for engineering. We feel she will be an inspiration to other young people to follow a career in engineering," comments Rene Rose, marketing manager for SEW Eurodrive who was part of the judging committee which eventually selected Michelle as the winner.
