The Optipact is an optical sensor system, which can replace contact-based measuring systems in areas such as measuring wheel applications. The manufacturer claims that this cost-efficient system is the first motion sensor for industrial applications that offers synchronous measurement of two orthogonal axes. This makes it possible to detect two-dimensional movements in any direction, rendering cumbersome adjustment and calibration unnecessary. Because the measuring process is based on an optical correlation method, no external reference pattern is needed. The device is able to directly measure on rough or structured surfaces. Errors caused by slip and accumulated dust or dirt are thereby avoided. This is beneficial in a variety of applications such as automated guided vehicle control where the position of vehicles is usually determined by means of an encoder. Optipact enables direct, reliable measurement of relative movements and speed, ensuring smooth operation. The sensors are available with a speed range of up to ±4 m/s. Depending on the type the sensors have a maximum resolution of 15 μm. Thanks to their incremental interface they can be used as a drop-in replacement for incremental encoders with measuring wheels.
