Containerised MCCs for Zimbabwe

First Quarter 2008 News & events

CHI Control Engineered Solutions has received a R4 million order for the manufacture and supply of containerised low voltage motor control centres (MCCs) for Bindura Nickel Mine in Zimbabwe.

The division is providing the client with a total in-house solution with the MCCs fitted with its range of IT components that included the IT PSNAP (Profibus Starter Network Adapter) combination.

The new cost-effective, locally manufactured PSNAP is a Profibus DP slave unit that interfaces between a Profibus network and CHI Control Component's IT starter range. This unit offers users a high quality product at a very competitive price. The IT Starter is an electronic unit that comprises a contactor section, motor protection unit complete with electronic control, and current measurement circuit sensors. This communicates to the PSNAP, which has the necessary field interface, module status and Profibus connection. The Profibus certified unit offers simplified functionality and is capable of auto searching for the network. The module has a self-diagnostic fault finding capability. There is also a freely available software tool for fault finding and to assist at commissioning. It has LED indication for all inputs and outputs and can be DIN rail or screw mounted.

The MCCs are being built, tested and commissioned at CHI's factory in Wadeville, near Johannesburg, before being containerised and shipped to Zimbabwe. Delivery is scheduled for November. The client has chosen the containerised option because final factory acceptance testing and pre-commissioning can be carried out at CHI's factory, ensuring that any teething issues are resolved prior to delivery to site. It is also more cost-effective than on-site commissioning.
