Keep cabinets cool and clean

Second Quarter 2008 Pneumatic systems & components

Drive panels in the mining and metals industries are often located in areas with high ambient temperatures and where air is contaminated with electrically conductive dust. It is important to protect drives and other electronics by preventing this dust from entering panels and keeping cabinet temperatures within equipment specifications.

Exair Cabinet Coolers are a low cost, reliable way to cool and purge electronic control panels. The cooler incorporates a vortex tube to produce cold air from compressed air - with no moving parts. The compact cooler can be installed in minutes through a standard electrical knockout. NEMA 4, 4X and 12 Cabinet Coolers matching the NEMA rating of the enclosure are available in many cooling capacities and are UL and ULC listed.

The wear, corrosion and oxidation resistance of the stainless steel vortex tubes assures long life and the lack of moving parts results in near maintenance-free operation.

Principle of operation

Compressed air enters the Cabinet Cooler and is converted into two streams, one hot and one cold. Hot air from the vortex tube is muffled and exhausted through the vortex tube exhaust. Cold air is discharged into the control cabinet through the cold air distribution kit.

The displaced hot air in the cabinet rises and exhausts to atmosphere through the cabinet air exhaust at a slight positive pressure. Thus, the control cabinet is both cooled and purged with cool, clean air. Outside air is never allowed to enter the control panel.

Where continuous cooling is not required a thermostat can be used to limit compressed air consumption.

Special coolers are available for specific environmental requirements such as high temperature and non-hazardous purging.
