CMG gets EE motor nod from Eskom

Third Quarter 2008 News & events

Eskom has registered CMG SA as one of only three leading local electric motor companies for the Eskom DSM (demand side management) Energy Efficient Motors Programme. The programme’s objective is to replace older, less efficient motors with energy efficient motors at an incentivised price for a pilot period of one year.

CMG has so far exchanged eight electric motors received from a steel processor for PPA Eff1 motors, ranging from 1,1 kW to 90 kW. The company urges end-users to bring in old motors and to qualify for the rebate by purchasing a brand new energy efficient (Eff1) motor. Eskom will destroy all old energy inefficient motors exchanged for energy efficient motors and refund endusers rebates to the three selected electric motor suppliers. Therefore, the subsidy to the end-user is instant.

The company’s flagship series PPA (Eff1) electric motor range adheres to the Australian MEPS2 standard which is considered one of the most demanding electric motor specifications in the world.

The DSM Energy Efficient Motor Program is a fairly new initiative and CMG’s inclusion in this programme gives the company the opportunity to approach Eskom power stations with the aim to be placed on their approved suppliers lists. “We are already supplying a number of power stations with PPA motors and expect this trend to increase rapidly in the short term as the Eskom rebate incentive is only in place for 12 months”, explains Lewis Hiepner, CMG Project/Technical Manager.
