General Pneumatics absorbs damper agency

Third Quarter 2008 News & events

Based in both Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, General Pneumatics is a company with almost 30 years of experience in the supply of low cost automation products from around the world.

The company offers a full spectrum of pneumatic components including air preparation, push-in fittings, directional control valves, actuation products and hydraulic shock absorbers. These are sourced from manufacturers which include Chelic Pneumatic, SKP, Jisan Airtech, Chicago Pneumatic, Ingersoll Rand and Goodyear.

In May this year Weforma appointed General Pneumatics as its sales partner in South Africa.

Weforma Dämpfungstechnik GmbH was founded in 1980 and manufactures an extensive range of hydraulic deceleration components for machine building and handling companies and the steel and glass industries. Air springs and air spring systems for vibration and isolation technology complete the product range. As well as standard components Weforma has established a solid reputation for providing custom modifications and specials. The company was awarded DIN ISO 9001 certification in 1994.

Hydraulic shock absorbers are used to safely decelerate any moving component thereby reducing shock and vibration, resulting in greater productivity with less downtime. The WEM type shock can be used in pneumatic rodless cylinders as a cushioning device to provide smooth, even deceleration; in the printing and paper industry to assist in paper positioning and prevent damage during printing press test runs, it is also used in the automotive industry in various applications including robotics.

A common application for deceleration cylinders is on self-feed drill presses. The WMV model rate control is used to control the rate of a pneumatic drill feed for a smoother effect - at the same time extending the life of the drill bit.

For the materials handling industry, Weforma offers heavy-duty industry buffers for crane and emergency applications. Two LDS or HLS buffers mounted on either end of an overhead or stacker crane help to reduce damage and injury caused by runaway cranes.

The Azmet Reactor project, a collaborative effort led by Viva Engineering, involved fabricating six massive reactors that were over three stories high in Gauteng, and then transporting these more than 2500 kilometres to a mine in the DRC - where all 3265 parts fitted perfectly, with not even one of the 26 900 bolts out of place. This was a massive achievement.
