TurboSyn coupling saves energy

Third Quarter 2008 Shaft power components

Nominal slip-free operation of fluid couplings can lead to lower energy requirements and higher output. Hans Voshol, Voith manager - Engineering Services says that depending on the application, slip-free operation can reduce energy requirements by approximately 3% for mills and up to 10% for fans.

The TurboSyn is Voith's world-wide patented friction turbo coupling. This synchronises input and output shaft speeds and eliminates the nominal slip usually prevalent in turbo couplings. The design combines the existing advantages of hydrodynamics ie, motor protection and smooth acceleration of the driven machine which are vitally important for the start-up process, with the advantages of mechanical slip-free power transmission used in nominal operations.

Voshol explains, "The basic design of the TurboSyn is similar to that of a traditional Voith turbo coupling. However, the inner wheel consists of separate pivoting segments attached to the hub in a rotary fashion. The segments swivel radially to the outside after the driven machine has been accelerated to form a friction connection between inner wheel and coupling shell when a pre-determined speed has been reached. The result is that the speeds of the outer and inner part are synchronised."

The compact turbo coupling does not require a control unit for protecting the system against overload as, due to its physical characteristics, the coupling is self-controlling. These couplings perform well even in the harshest of single drive applications such as mills, fans, belt conveyors, bucket elevators, crushers and pumps. The TurboSyn is an easy retrofit since the size and components of the turbo coupling correspond to that of a standard coupling.
