Coremo brakes, represented in southern Africa by Pneumatic Electric Control Systems (PECS), are making their mark on the local dragline market. The Coremo E4N caliper brake is a pneumatic spring-applied brake designed for heavy duty applications. PECS is currently involved with projects to review the existing brake systems on these walking monsters and has received great reviews from end users.

For a little bit of history about Coremo's accomplishments in these applications, one only needs to look to other mining countries with a similar environment. Australia is a good example. There are long lists of success stories at various mines which have converted to Coremo brakes and have saved a small fortune in production time, monetary savings and maintenance schedules, says PECS.

The brakes are of caliper and thruster design and replace OEM brakes on the hoist, propel and swing motors. These are large motors of around 750 kW. For dragline users these brakes have major advantages over original drum or low inertia brakes:

* Higher thermal capacity of the brake, especially in the emergency stopping of the bucket.

* The pads are easy to adjust.

* The pads are simple to replace.

* The brakes still hold the bucket after 3-4 failures.

* The discs can be changed out in minutes as opposed to hours.

At standing time rates of up to US$10 000/hour these are major cost savers for the customer.

Options

Various types of friction materials are available depending on the specific application. For applications in aggressive environments the brake can be supplied with special corrosion treatment.

Coremo was established as a brake and clutch supplier in Italy in 1960, received ISO 9001 certification in 1994 and VISION 2000 certification in 2003. In 2004 it received NATO certification and in 2005 Atex certification for its disc brakes.
