Voith establishes Nigerian company

Fourth Quarter 2008 News & events

Voith Nigeria was officially launched on 3 July 2008. Inem Essien, managing director of Voith Nigeria says, “Voith Nigeria is expanding quite rapidly and is fast tracking recruitment and training of staff locally. Although our South African counterparts are always generous with training, support, advice and sharing of resources, it is difficult for SA engineers to attend to maintenance in Nigeria’s oil rich areas.”

Nigerian power plants and rigs operate round the clock to produce the current 2 million barrels of oil per day requiring engineers on 24/7 standby.

With a population of approximately 150 million, Nigeria has virtually unlimited business opportunities and power generation is fast becoming insufficient to meet growing demands. Hydropower is a sustainable and clean alternative to conventional power generation. The construction of large new dams to feed hydropower plants is well underway in the North of Nigeria and a small hydropower plant in Abudja is in the pipeline.

“The country’s economy is vibrant and this is the right time to invest in infrastructure,” says Essien, who sees opportunities in the pulp and paper, cement and mining industries.

With the opening of the Voith Turbo Nigeria operation in West Africa and the recently opened Voith office in Accra, Ghana Voith is establishing a significant African footprint.
